Your Property Tax Bill Explained — Why Long Islanders Pay More Than Almost Anyone in the Nation
Long Island homeowners pay some of the highest property taxes in the nation, and many residents wonder why. The biggest reason is that local schools account for roughly two-thirds to 70% of the average property tax bill. Unlike many other states, Long Island relies heavily on local property taxes to fund public education, along with services such as police protection, libraries, parks, sanitation, and road maintenance. The region's many separate school districts and layers of local government also contribute to higher costs.
Property taxes can vary widely depending on where you live. Factors such as your school district, municipal budgets, property assessments, and available tax exemptions all influence what homeowners pay. Experts say residents concerned about rising taxes should review their assessments, explore available exemptions, and participate in local budget and school district votes, where many of the spending decisions that affect tax bills are made. High Cost of Living Continues to Challenge Young New Yorkers
The rising cost of living continues to make it difficult for many young adults to build a future in New York. According to a recent report from the New York State Comptroller's Office, many members of Generation Z and the millennial generation are facing higher housing costs, growing debt, and financial pressures that are leading some to leave the state in search of more affordable opportunities. Between 2013 and 2023, New York's population of residents ages 18 to 34 declined by 1.9%, even as that age group grew nationwide.
The report points to rising rents, home prices, student loan debt, and other everyday expenses as major obstacles to financial independence. Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli warned that without efforts to improve affordability, New York risks losing more young workers and families, making it harder for future generations to achieve the same level of financial security as their parents.
Despite the statewide trend, Long Island stands out as one of only three regions in New York that experienced growth in its young adult population during the same period. While affordability remains a significant challenge, the region continues to attract and retain young residents, highlighting its appeal despite the high cost of living. Experts say addressing housing affordability, employment opportunities, and the overall cost of living will be key to ensuring Long Island and New York remain attractive places for young people to live and build their futures.

Help Save a Life: Support Jed Siegel's Search for a Living Kidney Donor
A simple act of kindness could change—and even save—a life. Jed Siegel, a devoted husband and father of three, is living with chronic kidney disease and urgently needs a living kidney donor. Join the community on Tuesday, July 21, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Shelter Bay Yacht Club in Great Neck for a free informational and cheek swab event. The quick, painless swab could determine whether you're a potential match, and refreshments will be provided. If you're unable to attend, you can still help. Renewal, a nonprofit organization that matches kidney donors with recipients, will mail you a free at-home cheek swab kit. Living kidney donors typically return to their normal routines within a few weeks, do not require lifelong medication, and Renewal can even help cover lost wages during recovery. Even if you're not a match, sharing Jed's story could help connect him with the person who is. One small step from you could mean a lifetime for someone else. Weather For The Week

A Final Note with a quote
A Letter to Our Nassau Plus Family
Dear Friends,
Thank you for spending part of your week with us. Your continued support, encouragement, and willingness to share what's happening throughout our communities are what make Nassau Plus possible. We are grateful to have such an amazing group of readers who care about their neighbors and help make Nassau County a stronger, kinder place to live.
This week, many of us have noticed hazy skies and reduced air quality caused by the Canadian wildfires. While we can't control the smoke, we can take steps to protect ourselves and those we love. If your area is under a heightened air quality advisory, consider wearing a well-fitting mask when spending time outdoors, especially if you have asthma, allergies, or other respiratory conditions. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and after returning home, it may help to gently rinse your nose with saline or another method recommended by your healthcare provider to clear away particles you've breathed in. Continue taking any vitamins, supplements, or medications as directed by your healthcare professional, and be mindful of how you're feeling.
Please also take a moment to check on family members, friends, neighbors, or anyone you know who has breathing difficulties or other health concerns. A simple phone call, text message, or offer to pick up groceries can make a meaningful difference. Small acts of kindness often have the greatest impact.
Most importantly, remember that this too shall pass. We've faced difficult days before, and together we've always found our way through them. Clearer skies are ahead. Until then, let's remain patient, take care of ourselves, look out for one another, and continue showing the compassion that makes our community so special.
As always, thank you for being part of the Nassau Plus family. We hope you find time this week to enjoy moments with those you love, support a local business, attend a community event, and spread a little kindness wherever you go.
Stay safe, stay healthy, and we'll see you next week.
The Nassau Plus Team
Local. Connected. Hopeful.
