The Suburbs Aren’t So Sleepy Anymore

With inflation continuing to threaten purchasing power, especially for people approaching or already in retirement, The Wall Street Journal highlights Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) as one option investors are considering. Unlike traditional Treasury bonds, the principal value of TIPS adjusts with inflation, and their interest payments are calculated using that adjusted amount. The article notes that some TIPS have recently offered real yields, returns above inflation—of more than 3%, making them potentially useful for protecting money that retirees expect to need in the years ahead.

The article also explains that investors can purchase individual TIPS and hold them to maturity, potentially arranging bonds with different maturity dates to create a predictable stream of retirement income. TIPS funds and ETFs provide another way to invest, although their values can fluctuate and they don't offer the same certainty as holding individual bonds to maturity. Taxes are another consideration: inflation adjustments can generate federal taxable income even before the bonds mature, although TIPS are exempt from state and local income taxes. The larger takeaway is that when prices are rising, retirement planning isn't only about protecting the number of dollars you've saved—it's also about protecting what those dollars will be able to buy in the future.
