The Price of Education: Are Nassau County Taxpayers Getting Their Money's Worth?
Nassau County is home to some of the highest-paid teachers and most expensive public school systems in the country. According to a recent Newsday analysis, median teacher salaries in Nassau and Suffolk counties exceeded $120,000 during the 2024–2025 school year. Published salary schedules for 2026–2027 show that experienced educators with advanced degrees can earn as much as $179,323 in Jericho, $174,564 in Carle Place, and $170,382 in Great Neck. While competitive salaries help attract and retain qualified teachers, these figures are raising questions about affordability for taxpayers already facing some of the nation's highest property taxes.
The cost of educating each student is equally eye-opening. According to an Empire Center for Public Policy analysis, Nassau County school districts project spending an average of $42,350 per student for the 2026–2027 school year, compared with $41,410 in Suffolk County. At Nassau's projected annual rate, educating one child from kindergarten through 12th grade would cost approximately $550,550, assuming spending remained unchanged. However, these expenses go far beyond teacher salaries, covering administration, special education, transportation, employee benefits, building maintenance, and other essential services.
Are taxpayers getting the educational results they deserve? Supporters argue that strong teacher compensation and well-funded schools contribute to academic excellence, quality educational programs, and higher property values. Critics question whether continually increasing budgets are delivering measurable improvements in student achievement. For homeowners, seniors, and families on fixed incomes, rising school taxes create additional financial pressure, making it increasingly difficult to balance quality education with affordable living.
The challenge for Nassau County is finding the right balance. Excellent schools remain one of the county's greatest assets, but growing educational expenses demand greater transparency, responsible budgeting, and accountability. The conversation isn't simply about how much teachers earn or how much districts spend—it's about ensuring students receive a quality education while protecting taxpayers from unsustainable costs. With annual spending exceeding $42,000 per student, are Nassau County residents getting the best possible return on their educational investment? click here for full article.

Nassau County Business Update: Chip City Closes Two Local Locations
The changing business landscape in Nassau County continues to make headlines. Following last week's Nassau Plus story highlighting how local businesses are closing, adapting, and navigating an increasingly challenging retail environment, another familiar name has joined the conversation. Popular gourmet cookie chain Chip City has closed its Oceanside and Merrick locations, marking another shift in the county's local food and retail scene.
Founded in Queens in 2017, Chip City quickly became a favorite for its oversized, gooey cookies and rotating specialty flavors. The company expanded rapidly, reaching approximately 45 locations at its peak. However, its recent shutdown went far beyond Nassau County, with the chain permanently closing all remaining stores nationwide in early October. Local closures included Merrick and Garden City, while Oceanside had also lost its Chip City location.
According to company statements, declining consumer spending, changing customer preferences, and broader economic pressures contributed to the decision. Despite significant outside investment and efforts to stabilize operations, Chip City was unable to sustain its business. The abrupt closures left employees without jobs and loyal customers disappointed, demonstrating that even recognizable, fast-growing brands are not immune to today's economic challenges.
For Nassau County, Chip City's departure adds another chapter to the ongoing story of businesses struggling to remain competitive. As rising operating expenses and more cautious consumer spending continue to reshape the marketplace, both independent businesses and national chains face difficult decisions about their futures. The question remains: Which businesses will successfully adapt, and what will Nassau County's shopping and dining landscape look like in the years ahead? To Read the complete article click here

Weather For The Week

A Final Note with a quote
Dear Nassau Plus Family,
As we move deeper into October, I find myself reflecting on just how quickly life changes. The warm days of summer have given way to crisp autumn mornings, colorful leaves, and the beauty of a new season. Everywhere we look, nature reminds us that change is inevitable, but change also brings opportunity, growth, and new beginnings. Sometimes, in the rush of our daily routines, we forget to appreciate the simple blessings around us—a peaceful morning, a conversation with a friend, the laughter of family, or the beauty of a neighborhood we've called home for years.
Here in Nassau County, change is happening all around us. Businesses we have grown to love are closing their doors, families are facing rising expenses, and the cost of living continues to challenge even those who have worked hard their entire lives. From the growing cost of educating our children to the struggles of local businesses trying to survive, these are issues that affect our neighbors, our communities, and our future. Yet, even during uncertain times, I believe there is something extraordinary about the resilience of people. Behind every challenge is an opportunity to learn, adapt, support one another, and discover possibilities we may never have imagined.
I have always believed that life is about more than simply getting through each day. It is about finding purpose, pursuing our dreams, and never losing our sense of wonder. Some of the world's greatest achievements began as nothing more than someone's imagination and the courage to believe in something others could not yet see. We should never allow disappointment, negativity, or the actions of others to diminish the goodness within us. There is still so much kindness in this world, so much beauty waiting to be discovered, and so many reasons to remain hopeful. Sometimes, the greatest gift we can give ourselves is a little silence—a moment to reflect, reconnect with our Creator, and remember what truly matters.
And while life presents its challenges, there is still so much to celebrate right here in Nassau County! Autumn brings wonderful opportunities to reconnect with family and friends, explore our neighborhoods, support local restaurants and businesses, and enjoy the festivals, community gatherings, and seasonal activities that make Long Island such a special place to live. Whether you're taking a scenic fall walk, enjoying a warm cup of cider, discovering a new restaurant, or attending a local event, I encourage you to make time for the experiences that bring happiness into your life. Sometimes, the smallest moments become our most treasured memories.
As we begin another week, I hope you approach each day with gratitude in your heart, kindness in your actions, and confidence in the possibilities ahead. Be generous with your smiles, patient with one another, and courageous enough to keep pursuing the things that inspire you. Remember that success is not measured solely by what we accomplish or accumulate, but also by the love we share, the lives we touch, and the positive difference we make along the way.
Thank you for continuing to be part of the Nassau Plus family. Your readership, encouragement, and support mean more than words can express. It is a privilege to share the stories, businesses, events, and people that make our communities unique. My hope is that Nassau Plus continues to be more than a newsletter, that it becomes a source of connection, inspiration, useful information, and a reminder of all the good that surrounds us.
Wishing you and your loved ones a beautiful week filled with good health, peace, love, happiness, prosperity, and countless blessings. May your dreams remain alive, your faith remain strong, and your days be filled with hope and wonderful possibilities.
With gratitude and warmest wishes,
The Nassau Plus Team
