Old Budgeting Rules May Not Fit Today’s Household Costs

Traditional budgeting guidelines, such as limiting housing to 30% of income or transportation to 10%, can be increasingly difficult for families to follow as the cost of necessities rises. MarketWatch reports that even households earning around $100,000 a year may struggle to make the numbers work once housing, childcare, transportation, healthcare, taxes and other essentials are accounted for. The problem isn't necessarily poor budgeting; the article argues that familiar rules of thumb, while reasonable individually, may not reflect the full cost of running a modern household.

Instead of becoming discouraged when a household doesn't fit neatly into traditional percentages, financial planners cited by MarketWatch suggest focusing on the expenses families can realistically control. Housing and transportation, often among the largest expenses, can provide meaningful opportunities for long-term savings, while automatically contributing even modest amounts toward retirement can help maintain progress toward future goals. The article also emphasizes avoiding unnecessary lifestyle increases when income rises and considering ways to increase income when there simply isn't enough left to cut. The takeaway: a successful budget should reflect your household's actual circumstances rather than forcing your finances to fit a one-size-fits-all formula.

Why Are U.S. Gas Prices Rising If We Get So Little Oil From the Middle East?

Even though the United States now gets only a small portion of its oil from the Middle East, events there can still have a noticeable impact on what Americans pay at the pump. According to WKYT, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that petroleum products passing through the Strait of Hormuz accounted for about 7% of U.S. crude-oil and condensate imports and just 2% of U.S. petroleum liquids consumption during the first half of 2025. U.S. reliance on Persian Gulf crude has also fallen significantly as domestic oil production has increased. The reason prices can still rise is that oil is bought and sold in a global market. When conflict, supply concerns or other disruptions push worldwide crude-oil prices higher, American producers and refiners operate within that same market, and crude oil represents a major portion of the cost of gasoline. That means producing more oil domestically can reduce America's dependence on foreign suppliers, but it doesn't completely isolate U.S. drivers from global price swings. As long as worldwide oil prices remain elevated, Americans can still feel the effects when they fill their tanks. To Read the complete article click here

PEERS® for Teens - Social Skills Training for the Modern Teenager- 12 week Program Starting 9/21 Help your teen build confidence and develop meaningful connections with PEERS® for Teens, a 12-week, evidence-based social skills program designed for young people ages 12–18. Developed at UCLA, the program takes a neuro affirming, strengths-based approach and can be especially helpful for neurodivergent teens, including those who are autistic or have ADHD, as well as teens experiencing anxiety or other social challenges. Through interactive activities and practical instruction, participants learn strategies for making and maintaining friendships, navigating social situations, communicating with peers, and building greater social confidence. The program consists of 90-minute weekly sessions, with parents playing an important supporting role. During the final portion of each session, parents review the week's activities and learn ways to help their teen practice new skills in everyday situations. Rather than teaching teens that there's one "right" way to socialize, PEERS® provides a toolkit of practical strategies teens can choose from based on their own goals and comfort level. Online sessions are available via Zoom beginning September 21 and 22, with Monday and Tuesday program options. For more information click here

Weather For The Week
A Final Note with a quote
A Note to Our Nassau Plus Family: Stay Informed, Stay Grounded

There’s something special about this time of year on Long Island. The mornings begin to feel a little cooler, daylight slowly starts slipping away earlier, and before long, the familiar greens around us will give way to beautiful shades of red, orange, yellow, and gold. Fall has a way of reminding us that change can be beautiful, 0.and that sometimes slowing down long enough to notice what’s happening around us is a gift in itself.

Soon, our weekends will be filled with pumpkin picking, fall festivals, apple cider, farmers markets, scenic walks, football, comfort foods, and those first evenings when a sweater or light jacket feels just right. It’s also a wonderful season to get outside. Take a walk through one of our local parks, visit a farm, explore a downtown you haven’t been to in a while, or simply sit outside with a warm cup of coffee and enjoy the crisp air. Some of life's best moments don't require elaborate plans.

Fall can also be a reminder to appreciate the season of life we're in right now. We spend so much time looking forward to what's next that it's easy to overlook what's already here. The leaves don't remain colorful forever, children don't stay young forever, and the people we love won't always be sitting around the same table. Enjoy the moments while they're yours. Take the pictures, make the phone call, plan the family outing, invite the friend you haven't seen lately, and create a few memories along the way.

As always, we want to thank each of you for continuing to make Nassau Plus part of your week. Your time is valuable, and we never take for granted that you choose to spend some of it with us. We'll continue searching Nassau County and beyond for interesting events, local businesses, good causes, helpful information, places to explore, and plenty of reasons to get out and enjoy our community.

So as another beautiful Long Island fall begins to unfold, slow down when you can, enjoy the changing scenery, spend time with the people who matter, and appreciate the simple things this season brings.

Wishing you and your families a safe, healthy, peaceful, and beautiful fall season.

With gratitude,
The Nassau Plus Team
