Thousands of Long Islanders are facing major travel disruptions as the ongoing Long Island Rail Road strike impacts more than 300,000 daily commuters across the region. The strike, the first major LIRR work stoppage in decades, has halted rail service systemwide following stalled contract negotiations between the MTA and multiple rail unions over wages and benefits. With trains suspended, commuters are dealing with severe traffic congestion, crowded alternate transit options, and significantly longer travel times as officials urge residents to work remotely when possible. Limited shuttle bus service and other transportation alternatives are being offered, but many riders continue scrambling to adjust their daily routines. State officials and union leaders remain under pressure to reach an agreement and restore service as the strike continues to affect businesses, workers, students, and travelers throughout Long Island and New York City. Around Nassau County

  • Southern State Parkway (Hempstead/Oyster Bay): Routine maintenance causes intermittent overnight lane closures and shoulder shutdowns in both directions. [1]

  • Sunrise Highway (Route 27): Multi-million dollar repaving projects from the Queens-Nassau border up to the Wantagh State Parkway can bring rolling daytime lane closures and construction vehicles. [1]

  • Long Island Expressway (Melville/Huntington): Emergency repairs near Exit 49N (Route 110) following a large sinkhole continue to block the right and center lanes, causing residual traffic backups pushing back toward Nassau County. [1]

  • Local Maintenance Operations: Intermittent daytime paving and utility work will affect various county and state roadways, including Hempstead Turnpike

Weather For The Week
A Final Note with a quote

Dear Nassau Plus Community,

Thank you for being the informed, curious, thoughtful, and caring people that you are. In a world that can often feel loud, uncertain, and overwhelming, we are grateful to share this space with readers who still value community, connection, and staying engaged with the world around them.

We know there is much happening around us that weighs heavily on hearts and minds, and we continue to pray for healing, peace, and strength for all who are struggling. But even while acknowledging the hardships we see, we also believe deeply in honoring and celebrating the good that still exists all around us.

Every sunrise we wake up to with health and another chance at life is something to be thankful for. Every evening that arrives — even if it brings a tired body or weary spirit, is proof that we made it through another day. There is beauty in that. There is hope in that.

As we move forward together, we hope each day brings you something worth celebrating: a kind moment, a conversation, laughter with family, a peaceful walk, good music, good food, or simply the comfort of knowing you are not alone in this world.

Thank you for allowing Nassau Plus to be part of your week and part of this growing community. Keep your eyes open to the good, your hearts open to others, and your spirit open to possibility.

Wishing you health, peace, strength, and many moments of joy ahead.

Warm regards,
The Nassau Plus Team
Local. Connected. Hopeful.
