One Resident’s Persistence Leads to Major Water Cleanup Effort A Hempstead grandmother’s grassroots campaign is driving a major effort to clean Long Island’s drinking water. After spending two years collecting signatures and pushing local officials to address toxic PFAS chemicals, her advocacy helped launch a $60 million water system upgrade that will add new filtration technology, with funding from federal, state, and county sources and an expected completion timeline of up to four years.
