Lifeguards Urge Beachgoers to Know Rip Current Safety
Following several recent ocean rescues on Long Island, including an incident in which five swimmers were rescued by off-duty lifeguards at Robert Moses State Park, Point Lookout lifeguards are reminding beachgoers to understand the dangers of rip currents before entering the water. During a live demonstration, lifeguards showed how quickly a swimmer can be carried away from shore and explained that rip currents are powerful channels of water that flow away from the beach, even on seemingly calm days. They also pointed out warning signs, such as breaks in the wave pattern or patches of cloudy, discolored water.
Officials stress that if you're caught in a rip current, stay calm, don't fight the current, and swim parallel to the shoreline until you're out of the current before heading back to shore. The Town of Hempstead has also launched a Rip Current Safety Awareness Program, adding educational signs and distributing safety brochures at local beaches. Nassau County Department of Health Advisory Against Bathing at Beaches
The Nassau County Department of Health issued a temporary advisory against bathing at 19 Nassau County beaches following heavy rainfall that may have affected water quality. Stormwater runoff can increase bacteria levels in bathing areas, prompting the advisory as a precaution to protect public health. The advisory includes 16 North Shore beaches in Bayville, Glen Cove, Lattingtown, Laurel Hollow, Port Washington, Locust Valley, Oyster Bay, Sea Cliff, and Glenwood Landing, as well as three South Shore beaches in Massapequa and Island Park. The Health Department also announced that Hewlett Point Beach in East Rockaway remains closed due to elevated bacterial levels and will reopen only after water quality testing confirms it is safe. Highway and State Route Closures
Long Island Expressway (I-495): Eastbound lanes between Exit 39 (Glen Cove Road) and Exit 40 (Jericho Turnpike) will close nightly from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. The HOV lane will close starting at 9:00 p.m. This work lasts for about two weeks. Use the NYS Department of Transportation for updates.
Sunrise Highway (Route 27): Two eastbound lanes between Harrison Avenue in Hempstead and the county line will close Monday through Thursday from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. This repaving project lasts for about four weeks.
Peninsula Boulevard: Resurfacing by the Nassau County Department of Public Works is underway between Rockaway Avenue and Sunrise Highway in Lynbrook, expected to finish within two weeks.
Old Country Road: Westbound right lane is blocked for utility work between the Meadowbrook State Parkway exit ramp and Glen Cove Road in Carle Place.
