Nassau County has plenty to offer after the sun goes down. From live music and comedy shows to rooftop parties, waterfront bars, restaurants, dance nights, and community events, there are countless ways to enjoy an evening out. But having a great night also means making choices that help you and the people you're with get home safely. A little planning before you leave can make all the difference.
Plan Your Ride Before the Party Starts
One of the easiest ways to stay safe is to decide how you're getting home before you go out. Unlike New York City, many parts of Nassau County become much less walkable and harder to navigate late at night. If you're drinking, designate a sober driver or arrange for a local car service or rideshare such as Uber or Lyft.
When using a rideshare, always verify the vehicle, license plate, and driver information displayed in the app before getting inside. You can also ask the driver who they're picking up rather than offering your name first. Most importantly, never get behind the wheel after drinking. A fun night isn't worth risking your life, or someone else's.
Look Out for Each Other
Going out with friends? Make the buddy system part of your evening. Keep track of one another, especially when moving between venues, and make sure everyone knows how they're getting home. If someone has had too much to drink, don't leave them behind or allow them to drive.
Keep your phone charged and your valuables secure in a front pocket, purse, or zipped bag. Stay aware of your surroundings when walking through parking lots, waiting for transportation, or leaving a venue late at night. If something doesn't feel right, move toward a populated, well-lit area and ask venue staff or security for assistance.
Keep an Eye on Your Drink
Whether you're enjoying a cocktail, beer, mocktail, or soda, don't leave your drink unattended. Avoid accepting an already-open beverage from someone you don't know, and if you lose sight of your drink, getting another one is the safer choice. Friends should also keep an eye on one another and speak up if someone suddenly seems unusually disoriented or impaired.
Know When It's Time to Call It a Night
Part of enjoying nightlife responsibly is knowing when you've had enough. Drink water throughout the evening, eat something, pace yourself, and don't allow pressure from others to determine how much you drink. Sometimes the smartest decision of the night is simply saying, "I'm done, it's time to head home."
And remember, you don't have to drink alcohol to enjoy Nassau County nightlife. Great food, dancing, live entertainment, trivia, karaoke, comedy, and good company can make for an incredible evening all on their own.
Nassau County has a vibrant nightlife scene worth exploring. Go out, discover a new restaurant, dance until your feet hurt, laugh with friends, enjoy the music, and make some memories. Just make safety part of the plan from the beginning.

Back-to-School Health Checklist: Getting Kids Ready for a Healthy Year
As families prepare for another school year, News 12 recommends making health and wellness part of the back-to-school checklist. Parents are encouraged to schedule physicals and eye and dental exams, make sure required immunizations are current, and complete sports physicals or concussion baseline testing when appropriate. Families should also update emergency contact information and make sure schools are aware of medications, allergies, asthma, and other medical conditions that may require special attention. Preparation goes beyond doctor's appointments. Highway and State Route Closures
Major overnight road work and lane closures on the Long Island Expressway and Hempstead Turnpike will affect Nassau County traffic.
Major Highway Construction & Closures
Long Island Expressway (I-495) Eastbound: Overnight closures occur Sunday through Thursday nights from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. between Exit 39 (Glen Cove Road) and Exit 41 (Routes 106/107) for pavement renewal. The eastbound HOV lane closes at 9:00 p.m. Traffic is detoured to the South Service Road, with the Northern State Parkway recommended as an alternate route.
Hempstead Turnpike (State Route 24): Overnight lane closures in both directions take place Sunday through Friday nights from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. between the Meadowbrook State Parkway and State Route 110 for a long-term pavement project. Expect delays and reduced speeds through the work zones.
Work Zone Safety Enforcement
Automated work zone speed cameras are active in construction areas across Long Island. Fines increase for speeding past active highway crews, so observe all posted reduced speed limits.

Dear Nassau Plus Family,
As always, we begin with thank you. Thank you for continuing to read, share, and grow with Nassau Plus. Somehow, August is already more than halfway behind us, and we're reminded once again just how quickly summer moves. We hope you're squeezing in as many family outings, date nights, get-togethers with friends, festivals, concerts, beach days, and community events as you possibly can. There is still plenty of summer left to enjoy, so don't pack away those flip-flops just yet!
For families with children, this is also the season of back-to-school shopping, new sneakers, school supplies, schedules, and getting the household organized for the year ahead. It's a time filled with both reflection and anticipation. For students returning to the educational world, a new school year means another opportunity to learn, grow, meet interesting new people, reconnect with besties, and share stories about summer adventures—hopefully filled with a little wonder, laughter, and discovery.
But before the alarm clocks get earlier and our calendars become crowded again, give yourself permission to enjoy these next few weeks. Take an evening walk. Have dinner outside. Visit the beach after work. Catch an outdoor movie. Make some lemonade, invite friends over, or simply sit in the backyard and enjoy a warm summer night. Not every moment has to be productive to be valuable.
Summer isn't over yet, Nassau. Let's enjoy what remains of it. Make some memories, spend time with the people who matter, try something new, and take a little time to simply live.
