911 Memorial Breaks Ground

Nassau County has officially broken ground on a new September 11 Memorial at Eisenhower Park, with county officials and community leaders gathering for the ceremony on July 9. The project will create a renewed tribute honoring the lives lost in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and all those who continue to be affected by the tragedy.

The updated memorial is expected to recognize Nassau County firefighters who died on 9/11 as well as those who later lost their lives to 9/11-related illnesses. As the nation marks the 25th anniversary of September 11, the project serves as an important reminder of Nassau County's commitment to remembering the victims, honoring first responders, and ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten. Highway and State Route Closures

  • Long Island Expressway (I-495): Weeknight closures on the eastbound lanes between Exit 35 (Shelter Rock Road, North Hills) and Exit 39 (Glen Cove Road, East Hills). Work runs from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM for approximately two weeks, with the HOV lane closing at 9:00 PM. Detours route traffic onto the South Service Road.

  • Shore Road (Port Washington North): A long-term right lane closure is in place from Mill Pond Road to Harbor Road for seawall and concrete culvert replacements. Expect congestion, especially near Robert Dayton Park.

  • Sunrise Highway (Route 27): A massive $59.7 million resurfacing and resiliency project is underway. Spanning from the Queens-Nassau border to North Monroe Avenue, workers are replacing asphalt, upgrading storm drains, and modernizing traffic signals. Intermittent daytime and nighttime lane closures will cause localized delays.

  • Southern State Parkway: Keep an eye out for ongoing safety enhancements near North Corona Avenue (Town of Hempstead), which may result in localized overnight lane restrictions

  • Before driving, check the 511NY map for live traffic updates.

A Letter to Our Nassau Plus Family

Dear Friends,

As always, we want to begin with a heartfelt thank you. Thank you for opening Nassau Plus each week, for reading, sharing, and continuing to explore our community with us. Your readership means more than you know, and we are truly grateful to have you along for this journey.

Summer is here, and we want to encourage you to get out and enjoy it. Try something new. Stray a little from your comfort zone. Go to a local fair and ride something that makes you scream, or just go for the funnel cake and zeppoles; we won't judge! Visit one of our beautiful gardens, stop and smell the flowers, or enjoy a peaceful yoga session surrounded by nature. Take a walk around your neighborhood, dust off the bicycle, visit the beach, or simply find a shady spot outside and enjoy the summer air. Whatever gets you out of the house, if you're able, go do it.

And Nassau, we have a challenge for all of us: let's help get our young people off their devices and back into the world around them. Let them play ball, ride bikes, run through the sprinkler, climb on the swings, and laugh with other kids. Encourage them to socialize, exercise, explore, and maybe even get a little dirty. Technology is a part of their world, but it doesn't have to be their entire world. Some of life's greatest lessons and best memories happen outside of a screen.

The same goes for us adults. It's easy to get comfortable in our routines, but sometimes we need to remind ourselves that life is still happening all around us. There are new places to see, people to meet, foods to taste, and experiences waiting right here in Nassau County and across Long Island. You don't have to travel far to create a new memory.

So this week, we challenge you to do one thing outside of your normal routine. Bring the kids. Call a friend. Invite a neighbor. Or go by yourself and enjoy your own company. Take that first step out the door and see where the day takes you.

We can do it, Nassau. We can move more, connect more, laugh more, and make this a summer filled with real experiences and lasting memories. Stay safe, stay hydrated, look out for one another, and enjoy every beautiful moment you can.

With gratitude and warm summer wishes,

The Nassau Plus Team
Local. Connected. Hopeful.

“it's a smile, it's a kiss, it's a sip of wine ... it's summertime!”
